If I brought something to life using the cupboard it could easily adopt the personality of a complete jerk and would be no fun to hang around with. Animals on the other hand generally appear to have pleasant enough manners. I could learn a lot about nature too by talking to a species that aren't so detached from the earth. I'm also limiting the size of potential friends by using the cupboard. I don't really want tiny action-figured-size friends.

No kidding, just the other day I was telling Fabiola I wish I could speak to animals, like Dr. Doolittle. I saw a tiny squirrel having fun playing in some grass, and I wanted to stop and chat with him/her, to see why s/he was so happy. Also, I'd love to know what Fab's cat is trying to tell me when we have our little conversations (me: Kitty how are you?!; cat: mreoow!).

Personal side note: the movie Indian in the Cupboard made me cry when I was young because of the scene where the kid is reading with his mom and has trouble pronouncing some words. His illiteracy was very poignant to me--especially because the actor playing the kid looked to be in his teens.
